Chicago Cutlery 1090390 Review by Kevin P. O'connell "Critical Online Shopper" (San Diego, CA)
I bought these on a gold box for $60. They are very sharp but cutting with them feels a bit off. I bought them for my mom and she has more experience with them but also agrees something feels weird even though they really work quite well. I have a very expensive wusthoff set that feels better but need to be sharpened way more frequently. So for $60 they are a 4.5, but for whatever they are charging now... $130 for the cheaper block... I would say its a 3.8...

I purchased these knives to replace an old Wal-Mart set I had been using for years. I have had these for a few months.
Pros: Wonderfully sharp. Goood loooking. Great knife size/style variety for any cooking situation. The shintaku knife is the one you will use the most and having two sizes is great. Price is more than reasonable for what you are getting.
Cons: You will need to be very diligent about hand washing and immediately drying these knives, especially the steak knives. If you put them in the dishwasher (which you should never do anyway) or wash them and let them air dry, you will end up with some rust spots to clean off.
Summary: Cant beat the quality:price ratio, IMO. Just wash and dry after use and they will last a long time. If you take care of these knives they will last many many years.
Chicago Cutlery 1090390 Review by Layla Mah
I just received this, and I am very disappointed.
The first factor is that this product was misrepresented. The wood block is NOT the same one pictured. It has the same dimensions; however, it is more of a light bamboo in color. It is far far lighter than the "Honey Maple" pictured here. It also makes no mention of Honey Maple anywhere on the box!
The second factor, and this is the bigger problem, and the reason I'll ultimately be returning the set, without even having used it to actually cut things, is that the set feels and looks cheap.
1. The knives don't fit well in the metal/plastic slots, they wobble and in some cases, you worry that while moving the block (trying to figure out where to place it), that they might fall out if you tilted it a little. They look funny when you look at the block, because they just aren't sitting evenly.
2. When you insert and remove the knives, there's this horrible metal on metal feeling that runs through your hands. A little bit like fingernails on a chalkboard. Why on earth they did this, I don't know. The point of a wood block is to both hold the knives securely, and provide for smooth insertion and removal... this block fails miserably on both counts!
3. Some of the knives already have "stains" on the stainless steel, around the tops of the handles, which look "so shiny" in the picture.
The block seems to have been designed more for visual appeal than function... and if it looked as good in-person as it does in the pictures, I might give it two-stars for that; however, in-person, the block doesn't live up to the visuals of the picture, and I just can't imagine living with a knife block that makes me feel uncomfortable every time I take a knife out or put it back!
This review is not about the quality of the knives themselves, as I haven't used them, and don't intend to (I'm going to wrap it up and send it back). They look like they are of a better quality than the block; however, not the best I've seen or held in my hands either.
I know this review was full of frustration, but that's because I've been waiting to buy this for months (To give you an idea of how excited I was: I just received several items from Amazon all at once, and I rushed to the kitchen to unpack this one, before even opening the others), and it just really disappointed me right out of the box.
I hope some of you find this helpful. If your only concern is great knives, the other posts claim that these are, so you may still want this set. However, if you're looking for the whole package, with a knife block that is both aesthetically and tactility pleasing, I suggest you look elsewhere.
